La bohème at the Teatro Regio of Turin

On October 12, 2016 Massimo Cavalletti will sing the role of Marcello in the premiere of a staging of La bohème which, in addition to inaugurating the 2016/2017 season of the Teatro Regio of Turin, will celebrate the 120th anniversary of the creation of Puccini’s immortal masterpiece premiered in 1896 in the Piedmontese capital. The new production by Àlex Ollé will be conducted by Maestro Gianandrea Noseda, the Teatro Regio’s musical director.

“Marcello is the role that I have sung most often in my career”, says Massimo Cavalletti. “I owe a lot to this role and love singing it because of his personality: he is always ready to help everyone, positive and hopelessly hopeful.”

When asked about Gianandrea Noseda’s conception he explains that the Maestro “reads La bohème for what it really is, that is a miracle of orchestration, while trying to faithfully respect Puccini’s dynamics. He puts the voices at the service of the music.”

“The production by Alex Ollé is a departure from tradition”, continues Cavalletti. “He and his team have set the action in an inner city, in the outskirts of Paris, where students and foreigners live side by side with working class families and even some white collars escaping the city centre. Everything looks and feels truthful, plausible and youthful. In a few words, it may not be an ordinary Bohème, but it certainly is a beautiful story of love, friendship and true life.”
